The Beauty of the Detour: Why You Can’t Actually Get Life Wrong

The way I see it, we are always getting it right—even when it looks like we’ve completely fumbled, made a massive mistake, or fallen flat on our faces. Every single step leads us toward greater understanding and wisdom. The truth is, we just can't get it wrong. There are no shoulds, shouldn'ts, can'ts, or musts. Life isn’t a test, no one is keeping score, and nobody but ourselves is holding the grading pen.

I stopped viewing failure as a dead end a long time ago. Instead, I see it as a detour—like taking a scenic route that ends up somewhere entirely different from where you meant to go. Sure, you missed your original turn, but along the way, you gathered the exact information you needed to find a path far more aligned with where you actually belong.

It’s a lot like walking into an ice cream shop, feeling bold, and ordering a brand-new flavor. You take three bites and realize, nope, this is definitely not it. But you never would have known if you hadn’t tried it. Now you know, and you never have to order it again. More importantly, think of all the incredible, unexpected flavors you have discovered simply because you gave yourself permission to try something unknown.

So, don't be afraid of the missteps or the so-called failures. Sometimes, those messy, unexpected experiences offer up more insight and wisdom than success ever could.
